The virtual banning of American pulp magazines fostered a publishing climate which, for the first time, allowed the Australian publishing industry to flourish. Suddenly local authors and artists found a ready market for their material as publishers clamored for original fiction. One of the first genres exploited was "science fiction"; between 1948 and 1952 Sydney publisher Horwitz produced two series: Scientific Thrillers (43 novelettes) and Thrills Incorporated (23 issues). At a few pennies each, these monthly publications provided armchair entertainment for thousands of Australian readers. Luridly illustrated, hastily written and eagerly consumed, this genre fiction provides contemporary researchers with a glimpse into the anxieties and desires of a bygone era. During World War II the Australian government stopped the importation of all non-essential items. This provided a simple solution to what had been an on-going problem with American pulps and comics.
